Volunteer Mileage expenses

We are pleased to let you know about this piece of news from HMRC.

“From 6th April 2011 volunteer drivers will be able to claim 45 pence
per mile plus an additional 5 pence per mile for each passenger
carried in relation to the driver’s volunteering duties.
The passengers do not themselves have to be volunteers – but they must be receiving transport in relation to the volunteering duties of the driver.”

As you can see, volunteer drivers will therefore be able to claim the
passenger allowance for carrying service users. For example, a
volunteer driver carrying four passengers would be able to claim 65p
per mile (for the first 10,000 miles of driving in a year, after which
the mileage rate drops to 25p, but the passenger payment still
applies).

The government therefore has raised the limits for what volunteers are able to claim however it is important to check with each voluntary group to establish their policy on volunteer expenses.
